Wolf Playing Lacrosse is the second in a series of
limited edition prints produced by the Canadian Lacrosse Foundation
to honour the game of Lacrosse and one of its greatest coaches and
builders - the late Jim Bishop. The original artwork for this piece,
as well as future originals will be presented each year as the "Jim
Bishop Memorial Award" to the Minto Cup (National Junior A
Championship) athlete who best exemplifies leadership, skill,
sportsmanship, and the spirit of the game.
This painting was created by Damian
'Salaston' George, who is of the Tsileil-Watuth First Nation,
which is known as the Deep Cove area. Damian is the grandson of
Chief Dan George and Amy George. He is a coast Salish who was
raised by his mother Amy Marie George. |
Wolf Playing Lacrosse is done in a northwest coast
style of aboriginal art. It is an 18x22" print on white paper. The
artwork is in red and black acrylic. The wolf is symbolic of
togetherness and faith. The lead wolf watches over his pack for
fairness and equality and has faith in the other pack members for
its survival.
Jim Bishop is considered the greatest coach in the history of
Canadian Lacrosse. His career spanned 58 years and touched the game
at every level and age group as a coach, organizer, manager and
promoter. He respected the First Nation peoples for sharing the game
with all North Americans. His many accomplishments include winning
seven consecutive Minto Cups and initiating efforts at establishing
early pro Lacrosse leagues in 1968 and again in 1974-75. "Bish"
touched the lives of thousands of young Canadian athletes in a
positive manner.
The Foundation will produce 300 prints of The Creator's Game. Each
numbered and signed print will include biographies and photographs
of the artist and the 2000 recipient - Burnaby's Mark Miyashita.
Mark, throughout his career has embodied those qualities best
described by Damian George- he is a natural leader providing
guidance to team mates while instilling confidence in themselves..
The Foundation's goal is to create a strong future for the game
during this time of government cutbacks. In purchasing this print -
the first in a series - you are investing in the future of Lacrosse. The Foundation will pursue worthwhile projects to help grow the game that would otherwise not be addressed. |
