Canada and USA Face Off

Aug. 05, 2019

Peterborough, ON—Tonight was the big night for Team Canada. They played their third game of the 2019 Women’s Lacrosse U19 World Championship against the USA. The USA won 13-5.

This was an important game because it determined whether Canada would be seed one or seed two in Pool A. Canada had defeated England 18-8 on Aug. 2 and beat Australia 7-5 on Aug. 3. Both Canada and the USA entered this third game tonight undefeated.

The USA scored the first goal of the game. Kylea Dobson quickly tied up the game and scored the first goal for Canada, assisted by Shonly Wallace. Eve Hritzuk, Kennedy Lynch, Annabel Child, and Raegan Wilson also scored goals for Canada. It was during the second quarter where the USA scored the majority of their goals.

“That second quarter—that was our Achilles heel. We couldn’t get in a rhythm and we couldn’t break their rhythm. The first quarter and the last two, it was back and forth. At the end we were moving in offence,” said Scott Teeter, head coach of Team Canada.

“We were playing defence way too much, and we gave up too many second opportunities that led to goals.”

Canada is the reigning champions of the 2015 Women’s Lacrosse U19 World Championship. They are looking to defend their gold medal. As the second seed team in Pool A, Canada will face the 15th seed team on Tuesday Aug 6.

“We’re taking it one day at a time. We haven’t reached our fullest potential. We’re progressing every day,” said coach Teeter. “The girls are showing some emotion and taking it hard, but we need to bounce back tomorrow and get through the elimination rounds and hopefully see the USA again when it counts.”
