OTTAWA, ON— From November 26 to 28, 49 of Canada’s top junior men’s field lacrosse players travelled to Whitby, Ont. reuniting for the first time in over two years at a second evaluation camp.
The first camp, which was held in October of 2019, saw the player pool narrowed to 32. The second camp was originally scheduled for the spring of 2020 but was postponed with the onset of COVID-19 lockdown measures.
“It was great to be back with this group. It's been two long years of waiting to continue our process of selecting the top 23 to represent Canada in Ireland this upcoming summer,” said head coach Matt Brown.
After World Lacrosse extended the age group to include those who would have otherwise been overage due to the postponement, additional players were invited to vie for a spot on the national team roster.
“A lot can change over the course of two years, especially at this age with all the college and junior lacrosse experience these guys have had. We added around 20 new players that have shown they belong and deserve a look and fit the needs of what we are looking for to reach our best team,” Brown said.
Five provinces were represented by the 49 athletes. A full list of those invited to the evaluation camp can be found at the end of this release.
“The talent level was the highest it has ever been and cutting it down for the next round will not be an easy task,” said Brown. “All the players should be extremely proud of how they competed this past weekend, representing themselves in the great Canada way. Excited for what’s next with this group.”
The 23 athletes selected for the final roster will represent Canada at the rescheduled 2022 World Lacrosse Men’s U21 World Championship. Originally scheduled for July of 2020, this event will now take place in Limerick, Ireland from August 10 to 20, 2022.
